The Biden Administration Awards ICE $86M To House Migrant Families In Border-Area Hotels

According to reports, the Biden administration has awarded ICE an $86.9 million contract. The money will be used to provide temporary shelter and processing services for families cross the border without authorization and are in the process of being removed from the country.

The agency has signed nonprofit organizations–Endeavors–to handle the contract that will provide 1,239 beds and “other necessary services.” The family will also receive a comprehensive health assessment, which also includes COVID-19 testing.

Jon Allman Endeavors president and CEO stated, “critical services to migrant families, which is a continuation of services we have delivered to the migrant population since 2012.”

Other services that will be provided are: victim services, therapeutic regimens, educational resources and mental health care, according to Fox Business.

According to CBS News, ICE will begin housing migrant parents and children in seven hotels in April. This announcement comes days after it was reported that the White House planned to provide 2.5 million doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine to Mexico.

Most recently, “The Dream and Promise Act” was passed by the House in a 228-197 vote, according to ABC News. This bill will provide a path to citizenship for young undocumented migrants known as “Dreamers”—as well as other

individuals who are currently living in the U.S. with temporary protected status. This bill will support many who were brought into the United States as children.

The measure, and along with another bill, will provide legal status to undocumented farmworkers as well. This bill was passed by Democrats in the last session of Congress but stalled in a GOP-controlled Senate. The report stated that nine Republicans voted along with Democrats to pass the measure that would impact roughly 3.4 million people. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi let off a series of tweets celebrating the good news. She tweeted, “America’s Dreamers, TPS, & DED recipients are essential members of our communities. Today, @HouseDemocrats voted to honor their contributions to our country and their pursuit of the American Dream by passing the Dream and Promise Act. #HomeIsHere”
